Spotify gets a Running Mode

Spotify gets a Running Mode

Spotify has rolled out a new Running Mode for its iOS app, available exclusively to Premium subscribers in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden. If you’re in one of these supported regions and own an iPhone, you can now access this feature directly within the Fitness Hub.

What Does Running Mode Offer?

Inside the Running Mode, you’ll discover 25 curated running playlists designed to enhance your workout experience. These playlists can be customized based on workout type, duration, beats per minute (BPM), and your preferred music mood. Once you hit play, Spotify guides your run with music that adapts to your pace and activity level. The playlist seamlessly transitions between tracks, ensuring a consistent rhythm that matches your stride.

Customization Options

Users can tailor their running experience by selecting from various parameters:

  • Workout Type: Choose from options like tempo runs, intervals, or steady-state jogs.
  • Duration: Set the length of your run, from short 15-minute sessions to longer 60-minute workouts.
  • Beats Per Minute (BPM): Match the music tempo to your running cadence for optimal performance.
  • Music Mood: Select genres or vibes that energize or relax you during exercise.

How to Access Running Mode

To get started, open the Spotify app on your iPhone and navigate to the Fitness Hub. Look for the Running Mode iconโ€”it should be prominently displayed if you’re in a supported country. Tap it to explore the available playlists and customization features. The mode is designed to be intuitive, so you can jump straight into your workout without a steep learning curve.

Supported Regions and Availability

Currently, Running Mode is limited to Premium subscribers in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden. Spotify has not yet announced plans for expansion to other regions or Android devices, but the feature’s success could influence future updates.

Benefits for Runners

This new feature aims to simplify the process of finding the right music for running. Instead of manually searching for playlists, users can rely on Spotify’s curated selections that are optimized for physical activity. The BPM matching feature is particularly useful for runners who want to maintain a steady pace, as it aligns music tempo with their stride frequency.

Integration with Fitness Hub

Running Mode is part of Spotify’s broader Fitness Hub, which already includes workout playlists for other activities like yoga, weightlifting, and cycling. By adding a dedicated running section, Spotify caters to the specific needs of runners who require consistent tempo and motivational tracks.

Future Potential

While the feature is currently iOS-only, there is speculation that Spotify may eventually bring it to Android users. Additionally, the company could expand the number of curated playlists or introduce personalized recommendations based on user listening history and running data. For now, Premium subscribers in supported countries can enjoy a more streamlined running experience.
