It’s that time of year again – the new iPhone generation is upon us, and while the foldable iPhone Duo stole the spotlight this year, the iPhone 18 Pro series is still hard to ignore. So while we are waiting on the iPhone Duo to arrive, we are kickstarting the iPhone 18 Pro review process.
Design and Colors: A Subtle Evolution
Aside from the new hero Burgundy color, the 18 Pro also comes in Glacier, Black, and Silver colorways. The one we have right here is the Glacier paint job – a soft, almost pearlescent white that shifts subtly in different lighting. It’s a refreshing change from the usual space grays and midnight hues, and it feels every bit as premium as you’d expect from Apple’s Pro line.
The overall design language remains familiar, but there are a few notable tweaks. The most obvious is the smaller Dynamic Island, which now takes up less screen real estate. Apple has managed to shrink it without sacrificing functionality – in fact, it can now display up to three live activities simultaneously. That means you can keep an eye on a timer, a sports score, and a music player all at once, without ever leaving your current app. It’s a small change, but one that makes the always-on display area feel more useful than ever.
Build quality is, as always, impeccable. The 18 Pro uses a new grade of titanium that Apple calls “Aerospace Titanium 2,” which is both lighter and stronger than last year’s material. The phone feels solid yet surprisingly light in the hand, and the matte finish resists fingerprints well. The IP68 rating for water and dust resistance remains, so you can take it poolside without worry.
Display: Brighter and More Efficient
The 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display on the 18 Pro is a sight to behold. It now peaks at 2,500 nits in outdoor mode, making it easily readable even in direct sunlight. The ProMotion technology still adapts from 1Hz to 120Hz, but Apple has improved the efficiency of the LTPO panel, which contributes to better battery life. Colors are vibrant and accurate, and the contrast is infinite thanks to the OLED technology. Whether you’re watching HDR content or scrolling through photos, the display is simply gorgeous.
Performance: The A20 Bionic Chip
Under the hood, the iPhone 18 Pro is powered by the new A20 Bionic chip, built on a 2nm process. This is a significant leap from the 3nm A18 Pro in the iPhone 16 Pro, and the performance gains are noticeable. In our initial benchmarks, the A20 Bionic scored about 20% higher in single-core and 25% higher in multi-core tests compared to its predecessor. Graphics performance is also up by around 30%, thanks to a new 6-core GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing.
But raw numbers only tell part of the story. In real-world use, the 18 Pro feels incredibly responsive. Apps launch instantly, multitasking is smooth, and even the most demanding games run without a hitch. The 8GB of RAM (up from 6GB) ensures that background apps stay in memory longer, so you can switch between them without reloading. Apple’s new thermal management system also keeps the phone cooler during extended gaming sessions, which is a welcome improvement.
Battery Life and Charging
Battery life has always been a strong point of the Pro models, and the 18 Pro continues that tradition. With a slightly larger battery (up to 3,200mAh) and the more efficient A20 chip, we’re seeing about 10-15% better endurance than the iPhone 16 Pro. In our preliminary tests, the phone easily lasted a full day of heavy use, and with moderate use, you can expect to get through two days on a single charge.
Charging speeds have also improved. The 18 Pro supports up to 45W wired charging (up from 27W), which can get you from 0 to 50% in about 20 minutes. Wireless charging via MagSafe is now up to 20W, and reverse wireless charging is finally available for accessories like AirPods. It’s not the fastest charging on the market, but it’s a welcome upgrade nonetheless.
Camera System: A New Era of Photography
The camera system on the iPhone 18 Pro is one of the biggest upgrades this year. The main sensor is a new 48MP unit with a larger 1/1.14″ size and an f/1.6 aperture. This allows for better light gathering and improved dynamic range. The ultrawide camera has also been upgraded to 48MP, and the telephoto lens now offers 5x optical zoom (up from 3x on the 16 Pro).
But hardware is only half the story. Apple’s new Photonic Engine 2.0 leverages the A20’s neural engine to deliver stunning computational photography. In our initial shots, we were impressed by the level of detail, the natural color science, and the improved low-light performance. The new “Night Mode 2.0” is particularly impressive, capturing bright, sharp images with minimal noise even in near-darkness.
Video Capabilities
For videographers, the 18 Pro offers 8K video recording at 30fps, a first for iPhone. It also supports ProRes RAW and Log encoding, making it a viable option for professional workflows. The new cinematic mode now works at 4K 60fps, and the action mode has been improved with better stabilization. We’ll be putting these features through their paces in our full review, but early results are very promising.
Software: iOS 20 and Apple Intelligence
The iPhone 18 Pro ships with iOS 20, which brings a host of new features and improvements. The most talked-about is Apple Intelligence, the company’s new AI framework that powers a range of smart features. From improved Siri to generative photo editing, Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into the system. The new on-device processing ensures privacy, and the neural engine in the A20 makes everything feel instantaneous.
Other notable iOS 20 features include a redesigned Control Center, more customizable lock screen widgets, and enhanced privacy controls. The new “Focus Mode” now syncs across devices more seamlessly, and the Health app has been updated with new mental health tracking tools. Overall, iOS 20 feels like a mature and polished operating system that complements the hardware perfectly.
Connectivity and Other Features
The 18 Pro supports 5G Advanced (also known as 5.5G), which offers faster speeds and lower latency in supported areas. Wi-Fi 7 is also on board, ensuring future-proof connectivity. The U2 ultra-wideband chip has been upgraded for more precise location tracking, and the new “Find My” network is more accurate than ever. The phone also supports satellite communication for emergency SOS, and Apple has added a new satellite-based roadside assistance feature.
Other features include stereo speakers that are louder and clearer, a new haptic engine that provides more nuanced feedback, and a USB-C port with USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds (10Gbps). The Action button, introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro, is still present and now supports more custom actions. The Camera Control button, which debuted on the iPhone 16 series, has been refined with a smoother half-press for focus and a new swipe gesture for zoom.
Early Impressions and What’s Next
After spending a few days with the iPhone 18 Pro, it’s clear that Apple has delivered a solid upgrade. The smaller Dynamic Island, the powerful A20 Bionic chip, the improved cameras, and the longer battery life all add up to a compelling package. The Glacier color is stunning, and the build quality is second to none.
